Chocolate - San Churro
I've been patiently waiting since Christmas to try the hot chocolate from Chocolateria San Churro and finally it's cold enough to do so.
Chocolateria San Churro opened up last year in Fitzroy and it's a most sinful place to visit - the freshly made churros with your choice of molten dark, milk or white is a MUST HAVE. The most decadent item on their menu is the Tres Chocolates (it's a triple shot of chocolate - 3 espresso glasses filled with white, milk and dark chocolate!) - even Paalo was unable to finish that dish. If you do order it you need to drink it quickly - as it cools it turns back into solid chocolate!
Besides being able to gorge on all things chocolate they also have a range of products that you can take home - one of which is the focus of this post.
This is AZTECA - it's drinking chocolate flavoured with chilli and cinnamon.
It's simple to make, heat up the appropriate amount of milk, whisk in the required amount of chocolate and then keep stirring until the whole thing thickens.
The chilli is definitely a flavour that comes through - subtle at first it then builds to give you that typical "warm" feeling to your lips and tongue. It's not overpowering though, so you won't be breaking out in tears with this one and for an extra chilly day, it's a perfect choice.

I really do have to go back there and try the churros! My only experiences have been of the super-intense hot and cold chocolate drinks: I struggled (and once failed) to finish these rich, thick concoctions!

Hi Davimack - this type of chocolate is best drunk hot, as it cools it just thickens too much and isn't at its best. For me sipping a hot chocolate in front of a warm fire is just too perfect, drinking it at any other time of the year isn't as good.
I hope that they will open a Chocolateria San Churro in Sydney soon. I haven't had a decent churros in ages!

Actually my friend tells me they are coming to Sydney quite soon - Glebe (mid July), Miranda (end July) & Chatswood(Sept) - YAYY!

ReplyDeleteI asked some staff last week while I was in Melbourne and apparently San Churro are opening their Glebe Store on the 20th August now. Fantastic!!! Finally we can get some decent Churros and chocolate in Sydney! BTW, you have to try some of their new hot chocolate varieties....the Grandma Churro is UNBELIEVABLE...it's almost like your drinking a chocolate apple pie. It has to be tried to be believed.

ReplyDeleteYou should all try san churros hot & cold. it is hot choc with a scoop of ice cream in it.. so devine!!! You can drink it straight away..no burnt tongues!!!

I love the hot chocolate at San Churro. I live in NZ so I dont think it will be available here anytime soon. I really need to know how to make this hot chocolate in the mean time....can i just buy any chocolate like Lindt and melt it and mix with milk to get the same thing? Or do I need some special chocolate? If someone knows please help!! I am having really bad cravings!
ReplyDeleteHi Queen - they have their own range of drinking chocolate that you can buy at the stores. You might need to find an Australian friend to send you some.
