You might be thinking there's nothing luxurious about prunes but these prunes have been soaked overnight in brandy turning them into deliciously soft and boozy pockets of joy. In fact they are so good, I've upped the content in the recipe which should leave you with some extra to sneakily scoff while you're making the cake.

Dark Chocolate and Prune Cake
It's been quite a busy last couple of months so when it came to the issue of making a christmas pudding, I was on the hunt for a little less time consuming alternative. I found the answer in this simple yet luxurious Dark Chocolate and Prune cake from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Black and White Wednesday #18
The issue of taking photos of food in restaurants is one that is constantly being brought up - whether it's by media doing its usual bit of dog whistling in a vein attempt to stay relevant - or restaurant owners/chefs that believe that all publicity is good publicity. Yes, there are legitimate issues and there are right and wrong ways to take photos in restaurants - no, you don't take a tripod to dinner with you; I'll like to never see another table full of bloggers and their slr's snapping away constantly for five minutes at the appearance at each dish and finally I'd love to see the flash button permanently disabled but hey, a discretely taken photo shouldn't be an issue.
So for this Black and White Wednesday hosted by the unflappable Susan from The Well-Seasoned Cook, I thought I'd include a photo that always brings a smile to my face.

Weekend Herb Blogging #308 - Recap
It's been a great pleasure to host this edition of Weekend Herb Blogging - through the week delicious dishes from around the world have been appearing in my inbox. One of the things I love about WHB is how we can see the seasons progress around the world - with winter approaching in the northern hemisphere, you'll find an excellent selection of preserves. I'm sure there's going to be something here to get those tastebuds working.
Without further delay, onto the recipes - they have been arranged alphabetically by main ingredient.

Weekend Herb Blogging turns 6
Way back in what seems the dawn of blogging (2005) when weekends had been set aside for dog and cat blogging, Kalyn decided as a bit of fun, to post photos of the plants in her garden. From that simple act, Weekend Herb Blogging has grown to be a celebration of those humble, plant-based ingredients we use everyday and for the last year, it has been a great pleasure to see the introduction of the Italian version of Weekend Herb Blogging.
I would like to thank all the bloggers who take part, without you there wouldn't be a WHB and to those that each week volunteer to host the English -
Anh, Astrid, Chriesi, Chris, Cinzia, Graziana, Huan, Janet, Katie, Min, Lynne, Rachel, Rinku, Simona, Susan, Winnie and Yasmeen
and Italian versions -
Ancutza, Aitina, Branca & Conchita, Brii, Elena, Fiorella, Kris, Libera, Marta, Simona and Terry
From next week we'll also have a shiny new logo:
As part of WHB's birthday celebration, everyone that joins in this week will go into a draw to receive a choice of the following:
The latest from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall - River Cottage Veg Everyday or the classic by Alice Waters - Chez Panisse Vegetables. Either would be a great addition to any cookbook collection.
For those taking part in the Italian version - this week it will be hosted by Brii, they will go into the draw for:
Cucina Regionale - Ricette di Osteria d'Italia.
So how do you take part - it's very simple.
You have the week to post about any herb, vegetable, fruit, nut, seed, flower or grain - in fact if it is plant based, we would love to know more.
Your post can be informative and/or include a recipe where your featured ingredient is the main ingredient of the dish. Posts can be written anytime during the week but they need to be sent to me by the deadline.
Please include the phrase Weekend Herb Blogging in your post with a link to this hosting announcement.

Chocolate, Hazelnut and Ricotta Tart
Today is the start of Eurochocolate so it's fitting that this posting has a chocolate theme to it. There's one particular product you'll see a lot of in Eurochocolate and that is, unsurprisingly, Nutella.
But I've recently discovered an artisan alternative called Nocciolape - a mix of hazelnut, cacao and acacia honey

Piadina con Culatello
Here I am in the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy and the food item you'll see just about everywhere is Piadina.
Piadina is the unleaven flatbread of the region and I have made it for this blog back in 2006 (gosh, time flies). While I make a pretty good version of it back in Australia I'm curious to see how it compares with the "real version".
One of the more traditional fillings for Piadina is prosciutto but I felt like having something a little more special so I've chosen the ultimate prosciutto - Culatello

Carne Cruda all'albese
There's a dish I've probably eaten more of in the last few weeks than I have in all the previous years combined. I enjoyed the versions of it I found in Paris and now in Piemonte, you'll find it just about on every menu. You'll know it by its more familiar name steak tartare but here it's called carne cruda.
For steak tartare, the cut of meat most commonly used is eye fillet, which although tender isn't the most flavoursome piece of meat. For carne cruda, you use "fesa di vitello" or veal breast. To get exactly the right type of meat I've returned to my favourite butcher. After explaining what I wanted to make and for how many, he gave a nod and a smile as he headed to his special glass doored fridge in the wall to retrieve the veal breast. A minute or so later, it was done and I had this beautiful array of finely sliced veal before me.

Black and White Wednesday #12
One of the things that I've most loved about being here in Italy and in particular this town, is the open air market that rolls through the streets three times a week.
The subject for Black & White Wednesday, hosted by the indefatigable Susan from The Well-Seasoned Cook is one of the large trucks that make up the market - this one is a deli that any cured meat or cheese lover would want to have access to.

Fegato di Vitello e Salvia
There are lots of things that I love about being in Italy and having the luxury of, if just for a while, living in Italy. I do adore the proper butcher shops that I have a great pleasure of frequenting - I love the simplicity of their meat cabinets. Instead of an array of pre-portioned cuts we see the meat presented in much simpler forms.
At my first visit I was immediately drawn to the beautiful veal liver displayed before me and when two perfectly fine slices were cut, well, I think I've found butcher heaven.

Black and White Wednesday #11
It's been a busy and tiring four days at this years Slow Cheese held in Bra, Italy and for this week's Black and White Wednesday I've turned a monochrome eye on Cheese.

Be sure to visit Susan at The Well-Seasoned Cook to check out this weeks gallery - judging on previous weeks it is a must see for lovers of b&w photography.
