Cream - Meander Valley

You might remember that dollop of double cream sitting atop of the apple crumble...

cream

As much as I'd love to keep this cream a secret it really does deserve some kind of attention.

This is the Meander Valley Double Cream. It's a cream I would look at week after week but never buy it, opting instead for the Elgaar Dairies Double Cream.

The Meander Valley is located in the central north of Tasmania, so named for the meandering river that makes it's way through.

This double cream is hand produced in small batches - this allows seasonal variations in the milk to be adjusted so to obtain a consistent product. Nothing is added - it's just the product of pure milk. For those that like to know these things, it comes in at a minimum 56% fat.

I'll wait while you all lick the screen.

I do say that you know it's a good cream when you can turn your spoon upside down and it doesn't drip...

doublecream

that's just simple scooped out and holding tightly on spoon, turn it upside down and from side to side and it will stick - now that is GREAT cream.

Taste wise, there's a lovely natural subtle sweetness in the cream, it's not cloying, it doesn't feel heavy or fatty. It just tastes very pure.

Just a dollop of this placed on any dessert will immediately transform it into something divine.

Now for those that can buy this, please leave some for me!

  1. Oh god.

You caught me on the way to the kitchen to get a rice cake and vegemite.

That's so not going to do now.

  2. King island cream is also very much like that, a slight natural sweetness, extremely thick and ever so yummy

  3. That is unfortunate timing Lorena.

Hi bm - King Island is great but I'd place this above it.

  4. Whoa. I'm not sure if my taste buds could take that stuff. I think they'd implode.

They don't have anything like that in the US, which is why a lot of us go to Australia, I think...

  7. Hi William -it would be well worth the risk ;)

Hi Breadchick - I always find it surprising that you can't find good cream in the US - we're brought up to think that everything is available in America.

    Looks good, tastes fantastic Sara!

  10. Now that's what I call CREAM! I'd say that almost resembles clotted cream, so thick and luxurious. I much prefer the colour of creams like this one to the "brilliant white" cream you come across in the shops.

On the subject of Tasmanian produce, I recently came across some Leatherwood honey in my local Waitrose and snatched a jar of it right away. Are you a fan? I think it's delicious

  11. Hi Trig - it's similar in texture but whereas clotted cream involves heating, the double cream is a result of a simple centrifugal process - the longer it's spun the thicker the cream. I have just bought a local clotted cream so I should be posting about that soon.
I do quite enjoy the Leatherwood honey they also have a few others in their range that you might like to keep an eye out for Christmas Bush, Meadow and Eucalyptus.

  12. This double cream looks delicious -- not really quite like the crème fraîche we use in France.

I'm trying to expand my culinary horizons (I mainly keep up with French cooking blogs) and just found yours! I love the way you photograph your ingredients. Great job!

  16. I have never tasted a cream this good. Seriously.

I first ate it at the Shipwright Arms, Battery Point, Hobart together with the sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and ice cream.

I wish they have it in Canberra. :(
